Well I've been contemplating what kind of amp I will get next since I have a crappy starter amp. So Iv'e been looking at the Vypyr series, but I've hear sometimes the knobs break since they are firmware based. And they have issues sometimes with the different effects. I don't want to buy an amp I have to replace next year, so do all these bells and whistles translate into risk? Would I be better off buying someting like a fender frontman and adding a few pedals in the next couple years? Also if I really needed a certain sound I could add the effects on my PC. I don't know which way to go I just wanna jam in my man cave, I don't want an amp that will be a pain in my ass when I have to replace it.

If you have heard bad things and are uncomfortable then go ahead and get the Frontman and add effect pedals to it. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable with an amp. For that set up effect pedals and your PC are the way to go.

One of the things to keep in mind more than complexity is how long the particular model has been around. The Peavey Vypers are relatively new, and the general consensus from people who bought them is that they were rushed into the market with a bunch of flaws. Newer models might have those problems corrected, but who can say?

| That's up to the player. It's all personal preference. Beginner players will always want what their favorite band uses until they reach the point to where they understand how to create their own sound. Amps are just amps regardless of who makes them. A lot of amps are popular because of the artist that represent them.

Whatever anyone recommends , you'll have to go out & try it for yourself... There's many makes & models out there in every price range. Ask yourself - How much is my budget. - What type of music do I like to play. - Are gadgets more important than tone. Then go hunting for the best amp you can afford and don't forget to bring your own guitar to try them out. Don't settle for an amp, if you have to, wait and save up for something that really appeals to you.

I believe that the previous poster said it better than I could. A Fender Frontman or small 10 watt SS amp is not a Blackface Twin or Super Reverb. It's a particle board, SS amp to do small practice on. You might throw a pedal in front of it, but the speaker is small and the power section is almost non existant. You throw a distortion or boost pedal in front of it, you will get mush. In fairness, the Frontman series goes bigger than the small 10w starter, they can get as big as a Twin, but being SS the price is substancially lower, so is the output and tone. If your not for your own purposes going to purchase a tube amp or a big amp and just plan to use it at home, one of the modelers with at least a 10 in. and no smaller than 8 in. speaker would fit your bill, and probably your wallet too. VOX, Line 6, Fender, Peavey, all make some form of modelers. Just me... As to your original question of "complicated", they are usually very easy and intuitive to operate, the Vypyr looks a little high on sex appeal and lights and such.. that is always a flag to me. Give me some chicken head knobs, some descriptions or numbers and I'm good, all the flashing lights and back lighting seems to hide something...
