Default Rack Case in the Making

Alright so I decided to build my own rack case instead of buying one. I've been working with tools since I was 3 or 4 and come from a family of carpenters engineers and architects. Anyways today was day one of the project.

But first here's what I am using:
-2 x 8 unit rack mounts
-2 x handles
-T-nuts to attach the rack mounts
-1 1/2" x 3/4" bracing
-3/4" plywood
-carpet to cover the case
*will update as I add parts but these are the basics of the build

Home depot will cut to dimensions for you so I had them cut me 2 x 19 7/8" pieces and 2 x 12" x 16.25" pieces. I figure the the extra 7/8" will be more than enough to compensate for carpet and the rack mounts and I'll just adjust my bracing to fill any extra space. For this project I'm using mostly 1 5/8" wood screws and 1 1/4" wood screws.

Today was the first actual day of construction I'll try to keep an updated thread going so you can track my progress if you are interested. Today I didn't make a ton of progress because I got started them decide to go rock climbing haha. But at this point I have one side connected to the bottom fully braced. I'll get a photo tomorrow. So far I have used a ton of screws probably a lot more than I need to but I figure it's going to be covered with carpet so I might as well screw the heck out of it.

Will keep you posted on the process I hope to finish the actual box within the next day or two depending on my music schedule.

-Kevin

Sounds like you're off to a good start!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the top and bottom pieces need to be 20.5" wide? Assuming that the side pieces will be on the inside (common construction practice). You need exactly 19" between the inside walls. At least, that's how I built my desk, and my rack gear fits perfectly.

I might not fully understand your construction plan, though.

Thanks Mr.G,
I actually did this box unconventionally and to be honest I'm not quite sure why lol the sides but up against the wood. I remember planning this out and there was a reason for doing this but honestly I don't remember what it was.

Edit: as for gear right now I really only need it for some interfaces and my JMP-1

I plan to have a gun-cabinet type storage for my gear. At the bottom will be my amps and gear, and hung up like clothes at the top, my guitars.

I really look forward to seeing this finished. Also, check out Instructables.com if you ever want some inspiration or how-tos.

Sorry for the delay on posting the images been a bit busy vacuuming water out of our studio... lol

Here's where I am so far,

So far I haven't really had any major issues. The one thing that was an issue was the wood home depot sold me for bracing, it was horrible and kept cracking. I ended up finding some better quality bracing at a local hardware store which solved my problem.

Next step is basically carpet+installing the brackets

Enjoy!

Nice mac, but this isn't a guitar rack, its for guitar effects. but either way wouldn't mind seeing some photos of that guitar rack

Thanks Mr. G, had my dad take a look at it, he's an architect, he said that it is as solid as a rock I was going to use 8 bolts to hold the brackets in but he was explaining how 3 would be more than enough for a 16" span

The next step is carpet, then painting the wood mounts for the brackets (the missing piece of bracing) black. I'm going to use screws to hold the actual units in so the mounting pieces will be installed in a way that they are easy to swap out if the wood gets weak or I need to move stuff around.

All in all the project as been going good so far looking forward to seeing the final result.

Even decided to build a custom desk to house the rack I'll post some pics of that as well eventually.
