I like the echo of a guitar on a sustained note, and hearing the mild echo with the held note just decaying- nothing too overbearing, like I like most effects. I use a delay, (mxr analog delay), set at the lowest delay so it fattens up the tone (along with the EQ pedal); the delay is so transparent, you can barely know it's there. I do have a Boss Chorus....C-5 I think is the model. Think I can accomplish what I want 'tween the delay and chorus somehow (I really haven't messed much with the chorus, and don't even know where, how, or why I got it). Or, is this the case where I want that echo on a sustained note, that I'll have to stomp the echo box? I don't want everything to be echoing, necessarily. I liked the effect when I added echo to a track I did, and didn't notice the echo except for the single, sustained notes. The echo was so transparent, I only noticed it with headphones on, still, without headphones, it added a dimension to the sound. Suggestions, input, recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I can vouch only for EHX's delay pedals as they're the only ones I've had personal experience with. And they're good for sure.

Well, I do love my mxr delay. I'm just trying to figger out if I indeed need an echo pedal to accomplish what I want, or do I go for a dedicated echo. I can get the delay to give me like a slapback echo on certain settings, but I wouldn't want that throughout. I'll have to check the settings on my delay and chorus and see if I can come up with some kind of magic.

So you're wanting to use the mxr for a sort of ambient type delay that just thickens your tone, and then you want to have a short slapback delay for those few times you need it? Just get another delay... would be the simple answer. I don't know what the complicated answer is, so I'm just gonna stick with get another delay

I guess I'll have to mess with the mxr delay pedal to see if it give me that "decaying" note kind of sound. Maybe saying "echo" was wrong (?}. But I like the effect of a sustained note just hanging, then kinda slowly dying. I don't even know if I'm describing it well right now. I'll have to find that damn track where I heard the sustained note just slowly dying....coulda be reverb that I applied; I know I don't use echo on post processing. Bottom line is, I'm trying to accomplish what I did digitally, with my real life setup. Eh, i was up too late watching the Olympics last night,.

| I have a crappy Behringer digital reverb pedal. Maybe I'll give it a go. It sounds REALLY digital though. Basically, I'm trying to accomplish live, what I've been able to do with some post processing effects. Maybe this weekend, I'll give it a shot.

If the reverb has a tone control, turn it down so that the reverb is pretty dark. This will help kill some of the digitalness. I had a Digitech reverb once, and this was the only way it was usable. It also sucked all the tone out of my signal when turned off. I think the Boss or the Line 6 (discontinued) reverb pedals are pretty good. Or, if you want to go all out, you could get one like Akira got (there's a thread here somewhere).

| Are you talking slapback? The typical settings for slapback echo (for guitar) on any unit are between 100 and 200 ms and very few repeats. You won't really hear it while playing, only right after you stop. It just fills up gaps. It is great for chicken picking, rockabilly, and solo instrumental songs from Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Vai, Danny Gatton, and tons of others.
