Default Looking for something a bit heavier.

I'm into the prog/melodic metal scene (death, black, thrash etc...) and I play a PRS SE Paul Allender. It's a great guitar, fantastic body fret board, neck cut, and pick ups. I've been thinking about upgrading to a 7 string for that heavier crunch but I don't know what kind to get.

I've looked at Ibanez, Schecter, and ESP models and I can't decide. They all have great qualities but I'm stuck between a great model and price.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I don't know much about seven strings, but if I were to get one, Schecter would probably be the first place I'd look. I had a Schecter Blackjack a couple years ago, and it was an excellent guitar for the money.

I really like the schecter models. They look great and hold up very well. I think the one I played at a guitar center was a Hellraiser C-7. It had EMG 707 active pickups, mahogany body, locking tuners, it was great. Another that I heard is really great is the Schecter Jeff Loomis signature model, it's a little more expensive. But the construction is great. Ash body for greater sustain, EMG 707 active for a brighter tone, Floyd Rose tremolo, locking tuners.

No doubt schecter makes great guitars, I think a little more playing around will do it for me.

Thanks for the tip.

That is a hard choice but I'd say from my experience id go for the ibanez 7 string. Ibanez make some great guitars, ive got the 6 string ibanez mdx 350 maple neck, great to play, esp for thrash and shredding, and the proggy stuff like dream theater. Which ever one you decide on taking either way ul have a nice guitar, but i recommend the Ibanez.

Ibanez models are nice. The neck cuts are super thin and the tone is good.

I'll have to look around more and decide Ibanez vs. Schecter on these fields.

- Clarity in clean and distortion tones.
-Sustain
-The clarity of the extra string to see if one is muddy on the lower B string.
-Staying in tune.
-And the versitility of each guitar.

Yeah thatd be the best thing to do. I guess its all down to how it fits to your style of playing. My Ibanez has NEVER went out of tune, maybe slightly after going crazy with the whammy bar but even then its no big deal. The locking nuts do a gd job. Let me know which one you decide on. Have fun

I think I made my decision. I went to a Guitar Center and they had two 7 string models. They had a Schecter Hellraiser and an Ibanez RG series. Both were good, the Schecter had a HUGE neck but I had no problem with it. The Ibanez felt smoother, the cut away was bigger but between the Ibanez and Schecter I had no problem accessing the 24th frets.

Onto the sound... I might have to go back. I was leaning towards the Ibanez, but when I went back to the Schecter, it sounded dead. I think the battery in the EMG's was bad. When I go back and the Schecter still sounds like crap I'm probably gonna get the Ibanez.

I made my decision, I'm getting the a Schecter C-7 Hellraiser. It's black, Has a mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, tune-o-matic fixed bridge (love it), locking tuners, EMG 707TW active pickups, 2 push/pull volume knobs for more sound versitillity and 1 tone knob, 24 extra jumbo frets, 3-way pickup selector.

I'll be sure to upload pictures when I get it after I'm done testing it out on my amp if I ever stop, this thing is a beast!

I'll probably run it until the 9v dies on me.
