| I don't think that's a good idea. It seems to me, and I could be wrong, but if you get alcohol on the fretboard it might cause the wood to dry out?

Alcohol sounds pretty dodgy to me as well, along with household cleaners. Give this a try, works for me and I sweat like a turkey on Xmas morning..... The Swipe | string clean | guitar string cleaner | the string cleaner

Even something as simple as "Fast Fret", or "String Ease", Not the spray stuff, but the little cotton applicator on a "shaving Brush" handle thing is good. It contains basic cotton empregnated with common mineral oil. It is supposed to be for playing quicker and eliminates string sqeak when you change chords, but is a fine preservative on strings. You might get a unit of it on Musicans Friend or such, and try it out. At best, you'll play a little easier and a bit quieter, at worst, you won't but your strings might last a little longer. Unless your playing professionally, three to five nights a week and are working alot of chords and leads during your gig, you shouldn't have to be changing strings that often, however as I and others have said, different people have different chemical makeups, and some guys just kill strings with their acidity on their fingers. I recommend Fast Fret. Or, if your preferred gauge is available, get Elixir strings. Unfortunately in my case I have to restring every month or so (Dunlop .10-.60). But I have to say, using FF prolongs string life by like 1/3. For me at least. I used to use that Dunlop Formula something, but it work exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to.
