Default How do you feel about signature guitars?

Any sig owners here? If so, would you care to elaborate what were your reasons for buying a sig? The way I see it, some signatures are awesome because they offer features unavailable in other models - for example some signature ESPs and Ibanez. But then you have the Gibson Zakk Wylde signature, which is nothing more but a les paul with circles drawn on it. So how do you feel about signature series, gadgets for fans or valuable unique instruments?

(For the record, I used to own an Ibanez MTM1, not because I'm a slipknot fan but because the guitar sounded and felt really good, not to mention the looks)

Like you said, they can be interesting in that they offer features not available in other models. I'd never buy a signature guitar just because of the name on it, but I would buy the signature guitar of a player I didn't like if it offered something I was interested in.

There are some folks who seem to abuse the tendency of people to buy signature guitars, Zakk Wylde being at the top of that list. He'll slap a black and white bullseye on a turd and call it ZW Signature Feces if it makes him a couple of dollars.

Oh I couldn't agree more on this.

But I've got something worse... The whole thing Dean did after Dime's death. Yeah the initial line of Razorbacks was a nice tribute. But then another series came out, and another... and then the Razorback Dimebag Signature Bass. What the fuck. That's a goddamn insult to Dime and his fans. Making money off of dead people like that, nice going Dean.

I'm not one to even consider buying anything in a signature series. The extra money for a few meager ( If any at all) "extras" is just not worth paying for. I've read of quite a few members on my site that are in their teen years that go out and buy them because their Hero's play them, and being that young and impressionable, they buy them and the artist endorsing them gets the rewards for putting their name on it. To me, Gibson LP is still just a Gibson LP no matter what pups you throw in them. They will still feel the same, but may have tonal and gain differences.

Amps are a bit of a different breed though. I haven't tested too many sig amps, so I can't comment on that side of things.

Yeah, that turned ultra-nasty really quick. The proliferation of signature Dime crap was some sort of flood of garbage, and Dean squeezed every drop of blood out of Dime's corpse, and then ground up what was left.

I think that the Satriani and Vai models are just masturbation material for people who buy them. Teehee.

@Joe: yeah and all with Vinnie Pauls blessing. :/

Holy crap, that's the worst thing EVER. The best/worst thing about those new Fender "road worn" guitars is that they use a pattern to create the fake wear and tear... so they are all "worn" in exactly the same way.

I like the looks of a very well used and abused guitar, but I'm sure as hell not going to buy one that's made to look like it was used without ever actually being used.

I dislike the signature models too. However, as was previously said, they sometimes offer something that the other models in their price range don't.

The way I see it is that if an artists sits down with the company and says this is what I want on my signature guitar and its something that they would actually use in concert to their specifications then that is an awesome thing to the industry in general (run on sentence). But if they are cranking a new guitar every year that says Dimebag on it then thats a real dick thing to do.

The Clapton and Jeff Beck signature strats are cool, but when they come out with a 2pac signature strat I'm out.
