I don't know why I find that surprising. I'm Chinese myself, but born in the US. I still imagine China as some 3rd world country, and everybody working on farms, but I know things have changed quite a bit, especially with HK being reclaimed. I still have family that goes there every now and then. I'm saving that trip for my old age, but can't say it's high on my list of places to visit.

China makes great knockoff guitars from what I've seen, but have no idea how they play. There's a thread somewhere in here with a link to a Chinese company. I wouldn't take a chance on a Les Paul knockoff that goes for $150 US, and shipping is almost as much. Have you had a chance to try any of the copies?

Beijing is really modern but outside it gets third world quickly. It is an interesting time to be here. A lot of things are in transition. I was mainly surprised with Christmas. There were trees and Santa and all of the lights. It was pretty weird but it is just a commercial holiday (same as the States nowdays). Now Chinese new year... that was freakin insane. 2 weeks of fireworks and people launching industrial grade fireworks right in downtown middle of the street. It was freakin cool. I am going to spend a day on the guitar street sometime this spring. It is too cold now. I'll return and report.
