You make a very good point... But it all comes down to the style that the individual actually likes... Maybe it's just that I really like Metallica... idk

That makes a big difference. Really. We hear and see different things based on our point of view. I think Obi Wan Kenobi said something like that.

Jeez, first I quote Bugs Bunny, then Mark Knopfler, now Obi Wan Kenobi.

It depends. I have heard some modern Zeppelin covers that were just awful, I forget who did them. But I think it was a cover of Over The Hills and Far Away. I have heard some Zeppelin covers in bars that were just awful as well.

However, Jimi Hendrix did some great covers. The two most famous being: All Along The Watch Tower and Hey Joe. Zeppelin had some great covers and interpretations (including the various "Traditional" sonds they did). CCR did an amazing version of Heard it Through The Grape Vine, my favorite. They also did a great version of Hello Marry Lou, in fact I don't think there is anything CCR did I did not like. Muddy Waters did some great covers of Willie Dixon.

Hell as a matter of fact many of the blues songs people preformed later on were written by guys like Willie Dixon or Howlin Wolf, and there were plenty of blues songs with an unknown author that people went on to cover (although no specific examples come to mind).

Yeah, I think plenty of covers can be better than the original. That is not to say that there are not a lot of bad covers.

Mentioning ABBA is almost neg worthy imo. But I reserve that only for the most egregious of posts. Close, though.

OK, as mostly a folkie, Brendon, you're getting a +1 for this. But, it should be negated by your saying Hendrix is overrated. But I'm feeling generous.

Where did you quote Knofpler? He's one of my favorite players. Just curious what you said.

I agree CCR did a great cover of Grapevine ("I hoid it though the grapevine"). I love CCR also.

As an aside, for an instrumental cover version, have you heard Earl Klugh's acoustic cover of the tune? But I wrote him off after he said guitar should only be played on acoustics.

Wasn't Zep's cover of I Can't Quite You Babe, a Willie Dixon song? No, I think it was Babe, I'm Never Gonna Leave You- blah, maybe they're the same tune? I'm barely conscious now.

I had to refer to the back of my Led Zeppelin I album sleeve (I know 1 and 2 have a lot of covers):

3 songs are covers: Babe I'm Going to Leave you, I Cant Quit You baby, and You Shook me.

This. Why it took this far into the thread for it to be mentioned is a better question. Along those same lines, Hey Joe was a cover as well.

If you'd heard their version of Summer Night City you'd borderline rep me for it.

Personally, I think Aerosmith decimated the Beatles' version of Come Together. It made Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band worth watching, just for that one scene.

It's just one of those weird things where it just..."came together" for them better.

:EDIT: Should have read back. My post is naught but an echo to Classicrock's. Gosh darn.

I would argue against Aerosmith's ability to decimate anything but their own septums. But okay.

I always say "You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing..."
referring to me. Love that song. Gotta learn it. At least the rhythm.
