I think everyone has a since of comfort in music they grew up with, similar to how eating a good yakisoba would remind me of how many times I got drunk in Japan and woke up smelling like a stripper. I'm sure the music your accustomed to is probably more intricate and that may be why you think the old stuff is weak. But many people don't find the old stuff dated at all. For instance listen to something like The Doors Break on Through, then listen to White Stripes 7 Nation Army. If you really listen to it the same formula is there, and it isn't about time. Some people can listen to BB King and feel that it has relevance as if it was written yesterday and some cannot. In your defense in my work I go to alot of peoples homes and I cannot fathom how people can be entertained by watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show or many other B&W stuff, but to them I am sure they feel that Mayberry is just as relevant today as it was when they first seen it in 1960. Also don't think I am implying that you like the White Stripes. I also must commend you for sticking to your guns, it's ok to disagree with people. As long as debate is healthy I'm all for it.

Are you kiddin, I love The White Stripes. Of course all music has its roots, no matter what the genre. The roots are to be respected, that goes without question. However, there is a world of difference between respecting something and liking it. For example, I respect The Doors for what they brought to the table. But I can't stand their music, it hurts my ears, and frankly, the fact that Morrison was a fucking junkie doesn't make it any better (I hate hippies and junkies). So this thread, when it started, was about Metallica. Since the "metal" is in metallica, I feel the obligation to elaborate on the subject a little bit, so that you all understand what I meant saying "get with the times". Metal is not like the blues, or jazz. It evolves very slowly, in short bursts. The last burst occurred in the first years of this ending decade, and it was a short one - one that produced metalcore and the likes of it. Basically, hundreds of bands sounding exactly the same. The so-called new wave of american metal. Now it's ten years later, and they still sound the same, like if time didn't exist. Getting with the times in metal is getting in the flow and picking up the very few distinctive bands, from a melting pot of mediocre shit. And it does take a while to find something fresh these days. Bands that refuse to "get with the times" and stubbornly stick to old schematics and sounds are the plague of metal. They are the majority, holding back the few innovative ones. And so it is, boring and uninspired, until another evolution burst comes.

| Oh, BTW, with that comment, Binned. It maybe so, but you're being a little to righteous for my liking.

I still fail to see the difference between 7 nation army and classic rock. catchy simplistic intro riff.............. check building up....................check loud yet melodic chorus.... check whats the misunderstanding? Maybe the Doors isn't your cup of tea but I would bet if you looked hard enough you could find interest in some of the music you detest. and finally are you suggesting that drugs have gone out of style? Nobody tell Nancy Reagan that old biddy might have a heart attack.
