Every time I think of an island, I always think of something like Gilligan's island, where you can walk end to end in 5 mins. Most of the 5 counties that make up NYC are islands. There's only a piece of the Bronx that's part of the mainland. Anyway, Oahu, where Honolulu is, is monstrously large compared to Manhattan island. Last time I visited, my sister drove me up to the North Shore of the island, and I couldn't believe it was over a 2 hr. drive. I kept thinking, man, this is a freaking island, what's taking so long? @ Parralax: you ever get the clams sold out a converted ice cream truck on the North Shore? It's supposedly pretty well known on the island. That was the main purpose of driving up to the NS, and to see some really beautiful beaches.

That's over about a 40 yr. period in Texas, this is the first time I have bought and paid for one in Hawaii. In the stone age, you could pay off a car in 3 yrs. I've had multiple cars at times and paid on them together....that type of thing, so I'm not stretching the truth there...;-) Yeah, in reality, Oahu is not THAT big. It will fit into the footprint of DFW just about right. It takes a long time to get anywhere here, not because of distance, but because of island style driving. There is a popular bumper sticker here that says "SLOW DOWN BRAH, DIS AIN'T DA MAINLAND". Combine that with 3 small freeways, no service roads, two lane blacktops and more cars than are needed and it gets slow and long real quick. Oh, the plate lunch trucks and shrimp trucks on the North Shore,,, Kahuku shrimp, yowza, good grindz!!! There are dozens of plate lunch trucks, the most famous is the yellow one that sells the kahuku shirmp alfredo or scampi style.........Next time you visit slim, get around Kahuku, Laie, Punalu'u. LOTS of trucks, with lots of different seafoods, and all are fantastic.. Last edited by Parralax view; 03-18-2010 at 08:27 PM. |

Yeah, I figured as much, but I suppose I figured it would be funny to say anyway.

Yeah, it took me a while to get used to the names and words, but being fluent in Spanish has actually been a help here as many of the pronouncings are much the same. Yeah, Punalu'u and Kahuku is probably my most favorite places on the island. I have a friend that has a place in the Green Valley by the Punalu'u beach houses on Kam highway, many of those mountains, I have been to the top of, done the stairway to heaven over in the Haiku valley. That in itself is a complete thread... Kahuku has the most deserted and longest beach I have ever seen. I have been on it at 9 in the morning, by myself, a guitar tuned to slack key, and if it wasn't for the guitar, it would have been a thousand years ago....;-) This is indeed an awesome place to live.
