Thanks for the heads up, tg. I just realized I have a really cheap dynamic mic I haven't tried, and I ran into the friend that I might buy a LP from, and he said he has some Shure 57s and he'd look to see if he could part with one. He keeps everything mint, so I'd have no problem in buying a used one from him. I may know by tonight or t'mmw whether he has an extras he can part with, otherwise, I'll order from sameday.

I bought the 57 locally yesterday, as it was on sale for $88. A very good mic stand made by Samson was on sale for $20, and the recommended cables, also made by Samson came in a set of 3, each cable 18' long. I tested it late last night, but wasn't able to crank my amp- the mic was about 2" away from the speaker. It recorded faithfully. I'll have to move my laptop and interface closer to my amp, as I need to monitor through headphones linked to the interface. I'll have to tinker with my amp and settings, as the guitar sounded really dry; could have been because I was recording at such a low volume. Thanks for the input all. @Wanger: that recording sounded great! On my to-do list is how to record properly, adding drum tracks, etc. But that's low priority for me. If I spend so much time on gear related stuff, I'll never play/practice. PS-@goat: I don't know if the cables are high or low z, all I know is that they work. Good enough for me, as my needs are simple. Everything came to about $140. If there weren't a store sale, it would have come out much more.

Good choice on buying the SM57 locally. I have become a skeptic when it comes to E-bay. You can't go wrong with that mic its been the industry standard for many years, and there bullet proof. I've worked with singers that prefer them to the 58, and when it comes to cabinet or instrument mics they don't get much better.

Morning classic. There's a great little music store near where I work, and decided to drop in just to look. I saw on sameday, the exact same offering on ebay, but I knew I didn't want the included cable (1/4 " connection). Figgered I was there, it's the weekend, I'll have time to test it. Taxes here are monstrous. That's why I often buy online. Really though, I've never had a single problem with ebay. Those single coils I bid on was stupid of me, I know that. Guess I was meant to have 'em. I'm gonna try to turn them around. I'm looking at a fully loaded Strat pickguard for the pups right now on ebay. The smart thing to do is swap out the pups on a different Strat. But when it comes to gear and stuff, I don't claim to be the brightest bulb in the chandelier. I'm compulsive, and often make dumb decisions. I may go to guitar center today for strings and to look around. No telling what I may walk out of there with...

guitar center usually has a decent price on pups. for strats. for pick ups you might go here.. I just played a Les Paul and a Strat both through a badass Splawn amp.. Freakin sounded great. I mean perfect amount of break up , sustain, a even tones ,, very fine pickups in the guitars. I'm not easily impressed.. this time I was. http://www.riograndepickups.com/ Last edited by toastedgoat; 02-06-2010 at 03:38 PM. |

I may be there today. I'd be happy with plain old stock Fender pups; even from a MiM Strat.

I sat down at guitar center plugging guitars into a one of the vox modeling amp with the tube.. started grabbing all kinds of guitars.. went from the China strat to MIM strat to American Standard.. Big difference in tone.. I really dug the tones from the American Standard over all the others.. I'd say the pups /pots set up in those a quite a bit different than the MIM. You can get a stock set of American Standards also.. If you go there check it out.. If you have a decent ear ..you'll here the difference ..the alnico V give a little more bite, clarity and just didn't sound so mid-range .. more a a full spectrum of sound. imho ..that was about 6 different strats all plugged into the exact same amp and settings .. with me playing them. |

China makes Strats?? Yeah, I think I know the difference. Nothing chimes as well as my American. The MiM with stock pups doesn't sound as bad, but not nearly as close to the American. Yeah, the pots/pups/nut/ and probably the bridge isn't nearly as good on MiMs, but I still don't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a Strat, especially if they're on a budget. What I really hate about the noiseless pups, they just don't have any bite. The guitar is otherwise mint, and the guy I bought it from modded it with locking tuners, aged knobs, and I've gotten used to the color- cobalt blue with a paisley pickguard. It's a great overall guitar. EXCEPT THE PUPS! It doesn't sound like a Strat. The neck feel good (rosewood) too. Maybe I should just sell the damn thing and put myself and everyone else here out of their torture.

Yeah, I was thinking of Texas Specials. I'm also thinking of how much I want to invest in this stupid guitar when I'm sure I can easily sell it for at least $400 (based on what I see on ebay, and what certain guitars are selling for). But I love the feel of this guitar. I wonder if I tweak the EQ a bit, will I get the edgier bite I want? Dunno, this is one of the stupid things I obsess over that drives me, and probably everyone else here crazy. I've been meaning to put .10s back on my American, but I know that will be a major setup job, as I put .12s on 'em, and that took me practically a day to setup, and with that year Strat ('84), you have to take the pickguard off to get to the springs. I intend to lock the springs down tight, and fix the whammy bar which is the snap in type. Man, I really hate spending time on setups, tweaking and crap. I have little time as it is. I just want to plug in and play. And get rid of a crapload of guitars...I'm so confooosed! There IS such a thing as having too many guitars!
