From what I've read, it seems the Shure SM 57 mic is the mic of choice for recording. I found this on Ebay, which includes a 20' foot cable, and a mic stand. Shure SM57 SM57LC 57 Instrument Mic +XLR Cable + Stand - eBay (item 390151257161 end time Mar-03-10 09:20:49 PST) What I'm not sure about, in the description, it says Shure SM 57 SM 57LC 57 - is this any different from the mic everyone talks about? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Oh, and the price looks good, right? Everywhere I've looked, the mic alone is about $99. And there's free shipping. Slim

Honestly i would defo not buy a mic of ebay. You want a mike thats delivers clarity and has a fresh sound because trust me you can tell a mic thats new or has been used for years. The quality in your recordings is really what you are looking for. I agree the sm57 is the way to go but i wouldnt buy it of ebay. If you want something a little bit cheaper but for the same kind of quality try the Sure PG57. Ive trusted that mic for years and wouldnt really change. Hope this has helped |

Hi Mike, I have no problems from buying from ebay, having been plenty of stuff from them- guitars, pedals, and other items. I'd just like to know if the "SM57LC" differentiates it from the 57 everyone else talks about. It's listed as new, and the seller has a 97% positive FB rating, which isn't bad for almost 39,000 transactions. I'll take a look at the PG 57, but I think I'm pretty set on the SM57. Thanks for the input, and welcome to the forum!

Found a better deal from a reputable seller. Shure SM57 from zZounds.com I may have to call them, as I need a female/male cable.

I was just going to check sameday, as they're my preferred online music store (when I'm not buying used from ebay). I'll probably have to call them, as I really need a female/male cable to link to my recording interface. Even for $10 more, I think it's worth it to get the stand. I guess my question about what "57LC" means is a moot point. If I order soon enough, it's possible I may receive it by t'mmw becfause they're so close...but I'm supposedly working... PS: I know there's supposedly better mics out there, but my needs are simple. I probably could do with the PG 57.

I use 57's and Roland DR-20's. The DR-20 is around $80.00. It is also great for vocals. Here is a sample of a 57 and a DR-20 in stereo! These are the only mics that I use in my recordings including all vocals. If you eq and mix it right, they can sound as good as any mic. They are very quiet mics and dependable. http://www.atlanticplumbing.net/screwdriver.mp3 |

The SM57 is a great general purpose mic. I have used one for vocals and micing amp cabs. They take one hell of a beating and remain quiet and clear.

I can't listen now, Wanger. I have trouble streaming anything at work. I'm a noob at recording. I just want to be able to record myself live, when I many want to kick in an effect or something. I don't spend much time mixing; I have enough trouble getting anything recorded. But my interface has an XLR input, so I've decided to take advantage of it. Thanks for all the input guys. Now I have to order it. I'm going for the 57; I'll see how well it records with the 1/4" jack before I order the female/male cable.

your going to want to go with the Low z cable .. especially since you have the xlr input. (regular mic cable ). Even thought I do have low to high and high to low z transformers myself. I only use them in a have to situation (like a mic cable breaks or something) These mics are made for balanced usage.
