I'd say to focus on a few favorite songs, and stay focused, the sound will get better and better, once you have a couple of them down pat, you'll feel better and then move onto a 4th and 5th, rinse, repeat.

Don't give up on it. Don't sell off your gear. You may get frustrated and put it down for a while but it seems you always try to pick it up again.

Yep. Talent without skill will never be realized. But the flipside of that token is that skill can be developed without talent.
