Default Least cost way to deal with sharp frets?

What is the least cost way to deal with sharp frets and how? I am not keen on buying special tools coz they're really expensive.

Thanks in advance!

To do it right, I"m sure the answer is to buy the tools but if the problem is not bad I've just used an emery board before.

Do you tape the area around the fret ends?

I've used the $1 diamond file on sharp fret edges. I didn't mask off the neck.

Funny, I watched a half hour setup on YT last night, and he had a fret end file, and was thinking of getting one.

If I had the need to work with frets very often I would buy all the tools and as Silimtao says, I have thought of getting them as well.

In my case though, on the rare occasion when I've had a guitar with rougher fret edges, I've just used an emery board and I've been careful (no tape).

I'm not the best role model for this type of thing however.

I'm going to fix the sprouting frets on my Squier Tele this winter sometime. I have this set of diamond files and I use them for all sorts of stuff. I also have some very small triangle files.

I might buy a real fret edge file if I were working on a nicer guitar or if I did it regularly.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to shoot you. Just kidding. Its the kind of thing that, with a lot of practice, is really easy with just a fine tooth file and some really fine sandpaper. You can do both sides of the neck in less than a minute OR you can use a fret file and spend all day. Its something you have to watch to learn. Nobody can tell you how to do it and then you do it. Its one of those things where you have to remind yourself that you only get one shot at it and if you slip, then the damage is permanent. HINT: Never file up on a fret end. Always file down on it.

Thank you all! I ordered a fret end file on eBay for $5. I think it's coming from Hong Kong, so it would probably be here next year.

BWHAHAHAHAAA!!! OMG, that made me laugh.

You could have gone to a local Duane Reade and bought a diamond file for about a buck. That's what I use on my nails, and fret edges.

If it's sharp, can't you just tune down a bit?

(haha couldn't resist)
