Default Em9 in key of C maj?

I realize E minor is a chord in the c major scale. I wanted to spice it up a bit so I was looking at extensions such as 9.

But the 9 is an F# according to my chord book. The F# doesn't jive in c major. I realize the F# is coming from the 9th degree of the e minor scale.

Would this not be an appropriate chord to play in c major?

It would depend entirely on context - if it works, it works. For example, you could use it as a passing chord in G>Em9>F

Music would be pretty dull if nobody ever used notes outside of the scale or key signature. You can use any note you want anywhere you want so long as that's what you decide to do. It doesn't even have to sound good. Sometimes ugly works better than anything else.

Looked at in an entirely different way, you can be in the key of G major, then have the Em9 as the vi chord, and the C as the IV.

But, as noted, how you use that chord can determine other things as well.

Very good responses. Thank you.

Sometimes when I'm figuring out chords to mess around with I get stuck in a key.

Now that I think about it, and take it with a grain of salt- the F# isn't diatonic to C, so you could be in a modal progression. Possibly C Lydian. But my music theory isn't strong.

Let me make it simple for you. If it sounds good, it is good. If it sounds bad, it is bad. Even when playing CORRECT notes, you can actually sound bad. If you do play CORRECT notes and sound bad, then you should remember what you did and then don't do that anymore. I've seen people play things that were so wrong that it made me want to scream at them to stop but it sounded so good, I kept my mouth shut.

Jimi Hendrix put a C# on his Bm in Little Wing (key G/Em).
If it's good enough for Jimi...
