Talking Funny stories from the road?

Touring has its ups and downs, but some really funny (or embarrassing) things can happen without warning...

One memorable night on tour, our band pulled into a new booking which none of were familiar with. We had a very short time to get the gear out of the van and setup on the stage. The stage was small, but with a bit of work, all our gear went out and fit. The stage was low, but really, really polished. Our drummer had a special mat that he threw down under his set for these slick stages to keep the high-hat, toms, etc. from walking off. His drum stool had two rubber legs, and a third with a sharp 'spike' on the rear leg to keep him settled in the right place for the gig. Unfortunately, it wasn't on the mat. This night, the stage was not only polished, but (as it turns out), of a material that the point wouldn't penetrate. During one energetic song, the stool creeped back just enough that the spike left the back-end of the small stage. He started to fall backwards off of the foot-tall stage, and in a panic, grabbed with his feet and hands at anything stationary to keep him upright. Good move. The high-hat, snare, then tom. They quickly clutched together tightly in a metal wad, then rocketed backwards off the stage. In an instant, he had created the most unusual drum solo he had ever played. There was a moment of numb silence as the sound stopped, and when his head popped up with a big cheesy grin, the bar erupted in laughter.

Life on the road contained a lot of this. Anybody else out there having 'fun'?

Our singer was out walking about with his mic singing (at a posh function as well) and a guy punched him for singing to his wife.
He came up and told us all after the song we all went into hysterics the keyboard player lost his footing went over the edge of the stage and broke his ankle.
Stages are dangerous

So is electricity. At my very first episode in a 'battle-of-the-bands' concert, during the first song, I moved up to the mike to provide backup vocals, and due to poor grounding of my amp, an arc of electricity jumped from the mic and nailed my nose. I bit my tongue hard enough for it to bleed, and the crowd was loving it! Thought it was part of the act...

Run-of-the-mill story: had a show where the drummer didn't get his kit on a rug or pad or anything, so as we got rockin', his kit just kept creepin' to the front of the stage, until HE was front n center!!!

Think I've told this one before. My first real pro gig took place in Mexico on a one week promotional tour. I had never played in front of a crowd as big as this one. Was used to the low hundred and low small stages. All the sudden I was in front of a crowd of at least 1000. I was supposed to start with a acoustic intro but when the light flashed at me I froze up and couldn't start playing until I huge FART broke the silence and I started playing. I don't think the crowd got to hear it but the band did. I was so freakin embarrassed.

Yeah, my high school band played at one of our school dances once, but I guess there was some grounding issue somewhere because the mics kept zapping us. Nothing intense like you described, just a whole lot of tiny, constant shocks like you'd get from static electricity when you touch a doorknob or something. Our faces kept twitching as we tried to play, and our vocals probably sounded a lot yelpier than usual, lol.

Default Yolks on him.

80's, that's Awesome!! LOL

Sometimes the humor on the road came from jokes. In '76, I was in a show-band at the Aladdin casino in Las Vegas. The band played three one-hour shows per night; 9, 11, and 1. After a while you become used to the routine, and the crowds really play into how you feel that night. One slow night I remember really thin, dead crowds, and the band was almost a zombie band. We had three front persons; one lead vocalist guy, and two cute girls- one of whom was married to the lead singer. The show was fast paced, and we had a country set, followed by a guitar solo (me with Classical gas), during which the rest of the band had to run offstage and change from the exaggerated country outfits into exaggerated 50's clothes. This was followed by a comedian while the group slipped into another costume change for a rock playlist.

The 50's was the hardest change for the lead. The girls dropped from cowboy boots and sequins to poodle skirts and fuzzy sweaters, big earrings, etc. The lead had a big chore, popping into tight leather jeans, a shirtless black leather vest, gold chain. He dipped his head into a large bucket of water to do a comb-back, then as a the last switch, dropped into a chair where two thin-leather motorcycle boots were staged to complete the look. At this point he had about 10 seconds to get the boots on and run on to the stage into a spotlight. As such, he jammed his feet into the boots, jumped to his feet to seat them as he ran for the stage.

The 11pm set had been very slow, we were all up there just going thru the motions. The girls disappeared for a while between shows, then showed up at the 1am show with big smiles on their faces. ??. First act went without a hitch, but something was wrong at the beginning of the 50's set. The girls bounded on to the stage, the rest of the guys in jeans and white T's and sneakers followed. The stage light dropped, the spot came on, and...no singer. The girls bent over laughing, and the rest of us looked around puzzled at what the hell was was going on. There was a long pause, followed by the sound of 'squish, squish, squish' as the lead walked on the the stage. The egg yolks were already starting to bleed from the top of his boots, and the band broke up to the point we could hardly play that set.

The rest of the night, we played with some serious energy...thanks to the girls!
