"I don't always barre, but when I do... " I suck at it. Ideally I'd like to barre all 6 strings, just on principle and fatter sound, but I settle for this.

Or even adding finger to C on the A string.

I been under a rock getting fat, lazy and stupid. I just picked up a guitar yesterday after months, probably longer, and played a bit (more like "I like to think I played" ). I've picked it up before but almost threw them all out with the trash, so frustrated and down about it. But it looks like I caught my second wind.

Hope you stick with it, and hang around for a bit.

I just had a thought. WOW, that's rare. How high are the strings? That can make it almost impossible to Barre chords if the action is really high. Another thought is to try barring chords about halfway up the neck. It's a whole lot easier to Barre up there than it is in the first three positions.

I too am an advocate of if you cannot make a barre chord due to physical limitations, just thumb over the bass side and be done with it. There is nothing wrong with this technique. It does have it's limits if you have to move to the IV barre, but even then, it can be done.
