Tony Done The Oven's On But Nothing's Cooking Tony Done The Oven's On But Nothing's Cooking
Default Biscuit tin lap steel

I posted this in another forum, but it might interest some here as well:

It is acoustic, since the bridge posts go through holes in the plank and the foot of the bridge rests on the biscuit tin. The parts are all salvage from my workshop, and the fretboard is just masking tape with scrap book stickers.

It sounds OK, not loud and bit weak in the bass, but nice and resonant, pleasant enough to use for serious practice as opposed to just novelty stuff.

I recently modified it to include a pickup. Since the body is made of steel, I opted for a magnetic pickup that senses the top movement close to the bridge:

The idea is based on a Baggs magnetic banjo pickup system. Since taking the pic I have installed tone and volume controls.

I had previously tried it with Baggs reso pickup, and the magnetic sounds very much the same, but without the need for a preamp, and with a quality that you could easily mistake for added spring-type reverb.

The next step will be to add a magnetic pickup for the strings, but this is complicated due to the small size of the plank.

Outstanding! Well done, Tony

It looks and sounds really cool.

The hiss in the recording is actually a nice effect. Makes it sound like an authentic old time recording.

Thanks guys. I'm already thinking about the next one, as I have a spare tele neck that could be used to for Spanish-position playing.
