I don't doubt the truthfulness of the article. When I've eaten out with large groups, there's always someone holding things up because they're screwing around on their cell phones. I personally find it inconsiderate.

I still don't understand why going on your phone at a meal time, especially when eating out, didn't become a big taboo.

Im a bit confused if screwing around on your cell phone is pointed at the people who are supposed be serving you and cooking your meals or the customers.

Its a bit of a generalizing statement to say this of all restaurants.I rarely came across this kind of service. Its down to the owner of a restaurant to keep and eye on these kind of things. After all its their money that's going down the plug hole.

There are bad ones out there, but you look around, and find somewhere that offers what you want.

To be fair mate, we're not over that side of the pond.

I honestly don't understand what either of you are saying.

I think the point of the article is, the service of the restaurant didn't change, the customers did, through wanking around on their cell phones, and that's why it "took long" for service." The domino effect of slowing down one waiter by taking a pic for example is, everyone has to wait a bit longer.

Okay, I'll play devil's advocate.

Why is expedience the desired goal here? When I go out to eat, I personally don't like to feel rushed. I want to enjoy the experience... I'm the customer, I'm paying premium $$ for something I could have at home for less than half the price. I want to enjoy the atmosphere, chat with whomever I'm with, etc.

If the server has to come back and/or give us some more time, so be it. The management of any restaurant has an incentive to get as many groups in and out on any given night, so they want to expedite the process, but without being pushy.

Nothing wrong with that, it's a business after all. But still, I'm not going to let an establishment pressure me into moving any faster than I'm ready to.

That said, the playing with the cell phone business is getting out of hand IMO. I agree that it's borderline rude to sit there and text or FaceBook or play games when you're with other people. If everyone at the table is doing it, I typically wonder why they're even out and about at all. And if the server has come over to take care of their needs, it's definitely insulting to not put it away and pay attention. They're people with a job to do too, they're not your personal servants. And employing the server as group photographer and/or IT specialist is.... up to the server I suppose. They work for tips and every server and group dynamic is different.

Bottom line is I personally really like going out to eat. It's enjoyable to me and the missus. And if it's a particularly nice place with a great view, we're going to take as much time as we want. Apologies to the people waiting, but sorry... you should have gotten there sooner.

And we're very generous tippers, btw. The server's attitude and attentiveness and lack of pressure is reflected in the gratuity we leave.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

With respect to the linked article, people were complaining that service at (I think it's a fake restaurant, and more a commentary on the digital age, but, whatever) this restaurant was slow. People shouldn't complain if it's they who are slowing things down. I otherwise agree with everything you've said.

Your attention span has been lacking lately. You back to drinking this early again?

Where at? I'll have my phone out reading something at restaurants and give the little ones my 3ds to play with/destroy so they won't bother me.

Now if it's some sort of family gathering, with my older relatives that I don't see a lot because they have trouble travelling, then I'd understand that having my phone out when my older relatives are there would be kind of disrespectful.

*hic*

With apologies to the OP, I did not go to the link. I based my answer on the posted bullet points comparing 2004 to 2014.

But if the complaint was that service was slow, I personally have not noticed such a trend. If anything, it's the opposite. Service based industries are one of the few sectors of the economy that has pretty much held fast, and since people are watching their dollars more the emphasis has been on better service.

I would have to think that a lot of the complaining is due to overall perception i.e. kind of what you said. Shorter attention spans due to fast fast fast access to everything at their fingertips. It's probably just a simple matter of most people forgetting how to enjoy a leisurely dining experience.

I feel sorry for them.

Scratch that. Fuck 'em, the impatient twits.
