Wow, that was a great documentary, especially since I've met a lot of session musicians. It's a tough life for sure. The guy that left Ozzie, had HUGE balls to leave.

Joel seemed like a massive d-bag. I dunno if it was mentioned in the doc, but his drummer sued him for royalties, and they settled.

The Wrecking Crew was really really good as well.

At least these guys made some BIG bucks !!!! $5K/wk one of them said & that was in the 60's & 70's.

These have all been so good, are there any others that are recommended on Netflix?

I'm glad I did , and thanks for the other recommendations gang.

I've done a bunch of studio session/sub-in live work a long time ago for bands, that the band/s I was/were in were friends with needed a helping hand (Band member sick, quits, needed directional input, yada, yada, yada).

90% of it was done for free because I love playing, and they were an awesome bunch.

I don't have the technical skills nor knowledge to be a pro session player or hired gun as far as the "elite" term.

Post 'em up when and if you find them

That was a great documentary. Very eye-opening. I assumed there was a larger group of musicians that made a solid and stable living as studio musicians and hired band members.

I pull up Netflix Search and look under Documentaries. There are several good ones. Rush, Grateful Dead, Doors, and a boatload more. The one on Rush, I thought was very good insight into the band and its evolution.

I started watching the Wrecking Crew a few months ago and didn't finish. For some reason it didn't interest me like Hired Gun and Muscle Shoals did. Perhaps I'll give it another try.

The Rush documentary is awesome. I have the blu ray which has some cool outtakes. Among the outtakes are about another 1/2 hour of them having dinner at that rustic restaurant. As the wine continues to flow, it gets sillier and sillier. I think even if you aren't a fan of their music you may enjoy it. It's just a great story of how they got going. 2112 was do or die time, and they didn't exactly set themselves up for success with an album that had one song on side A .

I need to watch that again...it's always inspiring to me.

I liked the book, "The Wrecking Crew" a lot better than the movie.

An acquaintance of mine, good friend of a good friend, is a background singer. He has worked for Bowie, Billy Joel, Madonna... and done some touring as well. He makes really, really good money doing commercials because those get paid by where and how long they are being aired. It's a union thing and all the big advertising agencies have to use union talent.

When I worked in cable television I hired a lot of voice over artists and sometimes commissioned music as well. Never used union talent - couldn't afford it. Let me rephrase that, I would sometimes use union talent but not on their books.

I added this one to my Netflix watch list. Also found a cool John Coltrane documentary...and the George Harrison one. Now to find some time to watch them .
I never have time to sit down and watch this stuff. If an hour frees up, there's always something more important that needs attention.
