Correct. Use the fret markers for position. Neck should tilt up, towards shoulder, so you don't crank your wrist. If you tilt guitar to look at the frets, you'll crank your wrist as well.

Belated welcome to the forum.

I think it depends on what you want to do with your guitar playing. If you aim to play in a band or at open mics you're very likely going to want to practice standing up. If you just want to enjoy playing guitar at home I would play sitting down.

There are not necessarily correct or incorrect ways to hold a guitar, but there are ways of holding it that will allow you to play more easily. Sitting down is one of them. Sitting down you are naturally in a better position.

When you play the guitar you will improve much faster if you have good technique. Good technique really boils down to one main thing. Reducing excess muscle tension.

Great players make playing look easy because to them it is easy. They have spent their lives playing in a relaxed way, their fingers, forearms, shoulders and bodies are generally relaxed. This allows the fingers to move more freely across the fret board.

The reason I am saying all this is whatever position you hold the guitar in it would serve you well to make sure that you are relaxed and that your arms and fingers are not tense while you play. Any position that improves on this is a good thing.

One way I look at this is when you fret a note feel how lightly you actually have to press down to fret one note. It takes no pressure at all! Focus on playing with this amount of relaxation throughout and holding the guitar in a position that helps you do this.

Hope this helps!

Rule 1: The strings generally point away from the body... Unless your name is Jeff, in which case this rule is optional.

WHAT DID I DO, WHAT DID I SAY!!!

That being said if you're starting off might as well start off right I guess.

If you're playing guitar to get laid tho... that's not the way to go. Certainly not that outfit at least.

Seated Classical is something every guitarist should learn to do, not so that they play that way, but so they have a baseline for reference when working in or experimenting with other positions.
