That came up on my YT feed. I mean to watch it. While not really a fan, I really admire his work ethic.

Know why I groaned when you posted that medium swing BT? I'm a Berklee dropout. When I was there from '78 to just about '80, everything was a hard, bebop swing. Straight 4/4 didn't exist. It took nearly 30 years to get that swing time out of my system. I quit playing altogether from about '81-2008.

Vai graduated Berklee the year I entered. Thanks for reminding me what an epic failure I am as a player Goose!

Deja vu for you

Wow man. At least you went to Berklee. 2yrs there is at least something. Is what most of us can only dream of.

Not really a fan of Vai myself but what he can do on the instrument is amazing.
And I want a Jem!

Im gonna watch that too. Thanks for that, Goose!!

Slim, have you ever seen Vai live? I felt the same way that you do... till I saw him live. Aside from shows I saw when I was WAY younger (Deep Purple, electric Hot Tuna, Black Sabbath, etc) I've never seen someone "leave it all out there" on stage like Vai does. His level of intensity for like 3 hours is really something to see.

A guy that also leaves it all on stage these days (in a way that VERY much reminds me of concerts I saw in the late '70's / early 80's) is Zakk Wylde. He plays with an 'old school' intensity and power that I havent seen since I saw the original line up of Deep Purple.

The way he plays? He would have easily fit in a '70's power trio.

Hi Mg Hope you had a great new years
For the love of god has a certain feel to it I like the most from him. Perhaps tender surrender.

Its a interesting discussion. What he says rings true. Its different for everyone though. Technique, can sometimes dominate too much. But obviously not everyone will feel like that. But it works in reverse. With some there isn't enough (Which is what I suffer from ) Find it hard to study. Just want to play. Sometimes I think when we are playing, recording or what ever, we are still studying. But just on our own ideas, however simple. I will agree studying will help, But having the discipline is something else isn't it. What to spend time on.

Just curious, did you leave Berkley because the curriculum was too narrowly focused on Jazz? Did you feel like 4/4 music was being passed over as not important or insignificant at Berkley?
