Inspiration is from within. What you're asking is pretty vague.

Sometimes i just get caught up in the moment and things are great, but other times it seems i get thinking block or something and cant think of the story at hand.

That's normal. I've been doing that for 30 years now. The one thing to do is record everything you do. There have been times where just doing a noodle here and there turned out to be a full song weeks, months and even years later. I have some noodles that I have on cassette from the 80's that brought back some fresh ideas and revamped them into a direction at the time I was not intending to go in. If you're set in one Genre, look to other Genre's to possibly raise a eyebrow and make you re-think. The other thing is to write down on paper what you're feeling at the time. Try a lyric based tune first. If it's dark lyrically, set the tone for Minor.. If it's a happy mood, set the tone for Major. Don't get caught up in "This should be". Don't think. Play as you feel at the time and experiment. Try different tunings like open D. Try and think outside of the box and never limit yourself to what can come out of just trying something that you never thought of.

For me it seems the harder I think the less thinking I do. My best ideas have all come when my mind was as blank as possibly imaginable... of course so have some of my stupidest ideas so you can never be too sure what you're going to get with that approach.

Everybody gets that block. Depends on your mood, and surroundings and the experience you wish to convey. Right now, I'm writing a song called "Hokulea", it's not an Hawaiian song per se, I am not Hawaiian, but I live here and experience the Island lifestyle up close and personal. "Hokulea" is the star Arcturus, which led the ancient Hawaiians to the islands after exile in Bora Bora. I have applied the "Island E" which is basically a standard E chord with an added F made with the pinky finger on the D string . A twister of a chord to be sure, but it gives that wonderful lilting Island feel to the chord. Sometimes when you sit and think about "I'm going to write a song now" you come up with crickets. Other times, it's so spontanious, that you better have a pad and pencil close by..or better yet, as suggested, even a office memo recorder will do just to get it raw and dirty and down, before, as in my case, that one last brain cell flickers and you loose it..;-) Last edited by Parralax view; 02-12-2010 at 02:09 AM. |

If I try really hard to write, it is really hard. When I am goofing around I seem to come up with more stuff. If you have a webcam, just record all of your "goofing off". Keep the things that are decent or may have a chance of turning into something, and throw out the rest. |

I can write lyrics, I can make music, but it seems never will the two meet. I just can't put the two together. Well, I've done it 3 times. In 20+ years. I'm like Bernie Taupin looking for a Elton John to put my words to music. It continues to be my biggest musical frustration.
