i don't know if this is the right section but meh... i've just been really curious as to how you singersongwriters feel about the songs you've made and the process of singing while playing them... for some strange reason i actually don;t get into that 'feel' zone when i do what i do which i think is rather lame.. i think it's a bit different for non lyric based arrangements/whatever you want to call it... with that i kinda feel that it's actually easier to feel the music and that passion thing flowing.. is it just me? this is particularly aimed at hollybeans and brendon but anyone feel free to chip in...

Well... since I usually grunt and growl when I need to do vocal work this certainly doesn't apply to me very well. I'm not a good vocalist by any means so I'm kinda right there with you.

well its not so much about that but more of the feel that u get (or not) from an originally written piece... even with grunting or growling there must be some degree of feel no? how much do you get into the whole experiece? it's a little different when we play a piece that isn't ours.. i can't help to think that we tend to get into the vibe our favourite song more than we do with our own

For me, personally, I think I lack feel in vocals all around. I just suck that badly. I'm sure some people can get into it, but for me it's a foreign experience... at least with the voice.

Feel...ings? Does not compute. I don't know, my melodies for my own songs are pretty monotonous and uninteresting. It's hard to feel the same note thirty times. But I also feel this could just be because my voice is pretty inexpressive. I always picture my lyrics being sung a certain way, with different little inflections here and there, but when it comes down to it, I either just can't do it, or can't do it and play at the same time. So it usually doesn't happen. I think the same thing happens when I play songs that aren't mine, though.

of all the material i've done so far i can't say i get into them when i recorded... but it's a little different in the writing process... that's what i've been meaning to ask really..is that strange? it's not about how capable we are at singing its just how much of it you really get in the groove of things when recording.. perhaps it is different when playing on stage though? can't say i have done that before

| I think it's different for different people, josh. I think you're a natural at songwriting; I'm not. Things don't flow for me with words and music. No matter how much I think I suck at soloing, that is easier for me. I can make melodies if I want with my guitar, but that's normally when I'm not even thinking. For some bizarre reason, when I try to make a half decent melody to words, I get nothing. I envy your talent to do so.

Many times the "Feel Experience" is not there during a performance at all. We used to play 5 nights a week on a on a fishing pier 300 yards out in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a well known fishing pier by day and has a huge cabana bar and dance floor at the end that opens at night. It is common for 10,000 people per night to walk out there and check out the band, hang around a while and leave, then the next bunch of people show up. That goes on from 8:00pm until 1:00 am. The wind is blowing, it is hot as hell, your hands and face is really sticky, and we are tired from all of the walking and setup. The gig actually sucked, but paid some of my bills and it was good exposure. The thing is, you have to sing and play the songs like you are having a great time, even though we have played the same damn songs every night for years. Beach vacation people, no matter where they are from in the US, want to hear the same crap. Under The Boardwalk, Margaritaville, Sweet Home Alabama, Brown Eyed Girl, I love Beach Music, etc. I want to puke every time we play those same damn songs, over and over and over. Can you imagine a band like the Rolling Stones, singing the same songs for 48 years, and acting like they are having a great time every night. It is hard, but you have to act like you are having a great time and put everything that you have into the vocals and music every time, or be fired. You really have to be an actor more or less, because playing Jimmy Buffett and Lynyrd Skynyrd songs 10,000 times is not fun. The fun part is when you can play some of your originals songs at the gigs, sell some CD's, and have people tell you how much they enjoyed them. |

cool beans guys... i just feel that when i record my stuff i have almost zero feel to it... theres little to no passion at all in my vocals (except drunken recordings).... but noodling around with bluesy stuff i feel it gets way more intense and i get more kick out of it emotion-wise... yeah i can only imagine how its like playing the same song so many times... i guess with performing you really don;t have a choice and its a bit different.. i do enjoy some covers that i play for my own entertainment at home but i can only do so much.. much of the stuff ive done and learnt to do ive forgotten the bulk of it i must say.. whenever someone go like 'hey play something!' im like bleurghhhhhhh what?

Doing vocals is probably the same as learning guitar. Before you can get into it and feel it, you have to know your technique so well that you don't think about the technical aspects anymore and just sing. I think you have to like doing vocals and singing lyrics with a personal meaning to them too and you have to enjoy singing as a way of personally expressing yourself.
