This another way to utilize the CAGED chord system It would really help to understand what the CAGED chords and inversions are before getting into this, if you don't get it please ask ![]() here's the CAGED chords - C major triads |-------------8----8-----12-|-| |---1----5----5----8-----13-|-| |---0----5----5----9-----12-|-| |---2----5----5----10----10-|-| |---3----3----7----10-------|-| |-------------8----8--------|-| Here is the three inversions of the C major triad "A chord's inversion describes the relationship of its bass to the other tones in the chord. For instance, a C major triad contains the tones C, E and G; its inversion is determined by which of these tones is used as the bottom note in the chord." wiki 1st..............................2nd.............. ...............3rd G.................................C............... ...................E - voice three E.................................G............... ...................C - voice two C.................................E............... ...................G - voice one And this is how inversions and the CAGED chords work - the best chord for this is the E shape this is the C major triad using the E shape -8 -8 -9 -10 -10 -8 1st inversion - -8 --- G -9 --- E -10 - C - - 2nd inversion -8 - C -8 - G -9 - E - - - 3rd inversion - - - 9 -- E -10 - C -10 - G - Can you see the vertical nature of the inversions on the guitar neck? All the CAGED chords flow through the inversions in this pattern (low to high string) If there were manystrings on the guitar the inversion pattern would look like this G E C G E C G E C G E C I see all the inversions in there, I also see all the CAGED chords hey, it's just like a piano. Please ask questions, ideas, and comments, have fun. Last edited by Clifford D; 02-07-2010 at 02:28 PM. |

Here's 3 "Shapes" I like to use a LOT. ![]() They come directly from those CAGED Forms, too. Code: -|-|-----|------|-------|-|
-|-|--3--|--8---|--12---|-|
-|-|--4--|--7---|--12---|-|
-|-|--5--|--9---|--12---|-|
-|-|-----|------|-------|-|
-|-|-----|------|-------|-|

Here's the inversions, see how they repeat the three inversion structures through each vertical sweep. C maj arps or chords |------------------12--------------8------------8------------3------------0-| |---------------13---------------8------------5------------5------------1---| |------------12----------------9------------5------------5------------0-----| |---------10----------------10------------5------------5------------2-------| |------10----------------10-------------7------------3------------3---------| |---12-----------------8--------------8------------3------------3-----------| hmm, I missed one |

Man, I've made all the "Metalheads" happy with the Inversions onthe Low Strings EAD. They really dig how using those Inversions can give a "Low and Heavy" type of sound. Kind of like being Detuned, but without changing anything but use. With the G Triads: - - - 0 2 3 And: - - - 5 5 7 And: - - - 9 10 10 Finally starting to repeat the Pattern: - - - 12 14 15 |
